Join our Scouting Expedition in the Chilean Andes

This Chile volcano ski touring trip is an early-stage exploration of a potential new KMX destination in Central Chile.

Over the course of the week, you will move across a chain of volcanoes in the Andes, ski touring on broad, open slopes shaped by volcanic terrain and descending long lines that stretch from crater to valley. We'll move from one volcano to the other, in two different areas, adapting to conditions, and making the most of what each day.

As a scouting trip, the structure is intentionally flexible. Routes, objectives, and the overall flow of the week may evolve along the way. The goal is not to follow a fixed program, but to explore the region in depth and understand its potential as part of the KMX portfolio.

You will join a small group led by Gonz Ferrero and Fred Buttard—both founders of KMX (with Fred also an IFMGA guide)—working alongside local Chilean guides to shape the experience as you move through this landscape. alongside local Chilean guides to shape the experience while moving through this landscape.

Suggested itinerary

A four-wheel-drive vehicle travels along a dirt road through a forest of tall, sparse trees with distinctive, umbrella-shaped canopies. The scene is lit by warm, low sunlight, with dry undergrowth on either side of the road and distant, snow-capped mountains visible beyond the trees under a clear sky.

Day 1 — Arrival in Temuco

Arrival at Temuco Airport followed by a transfer of around two hours to Malalcahuello. You settle into Casa Río and have the option for short warm-up laps at Corralco. The day ends with a welcome dinner and an introduction to the week, with plans kept flexible.

A lone ski tourer with a backpack and poles walks across a wide, snow-covered mountain slope. In the distance, layered mountain ranges stretch under a clear blue sky, with a prominent snow-capped peak rising above the surrounding terrain.

Day 2 — Lonquimay Volcano

The first full touring day takes place on Lonquimay. A steady ascent leads to wide volcanic slopes, with the possibility to ski inside the crater before continuing into long, continuous descents that can extend toward the hot springs.

A group of people sits around an outdoor table at a rural farm setting, drinking beverages and eating bread. The table is set with simple dishes and glasses, and the scene is surrounded by gravel ground, garden beds, and small buildings. In the background, trees with dense green foliage stand beneath a clear blue sky, and farm equipment and structures are visible nearby.

Day 3 — Sierra Nevada & Mapuche Community

A day combining alpine terrain and forest sections, adapting to conditions to find the best skiing. In the evening, you visit a local Mapuche community for a traditional dinner.

A skier stands on a snow-covered plateau, pointing with a ski pole toward a prominent, snow-capped volcanic peak in the distance. The skier wears a backpack and ski gear, and rugged mountains surround the scene under a clear, expansive sky.

Day 4 — Llaima Volcano (3,125 m)

A sustained climb on Llaima with views across Conguillío National Park, followed by a long descent on open volcanic terrain. Optional spa visit in the evening.

A group of people stands outdoors beside a rugged camper van, holding skis and raising canned drinks in a celebratory toast. The van has visible text reading “180 SUR Adventure Driven Campers” and “Go Unplug.” The group is gathered on dark, rocky ground with patches of snow and volcanic terrain, while snow-covered mountains rise in the background under a clear blue sky.

Day 5 — Transfer to Pucón

Transfer south to Pucón, approximately three hours. The afternoon is free to rest or explore before settling into Aldea Naukana for the remaining days.

A skier carves through soft snow on a wide, sunlit mountainside at sunset, sending a spray of powder behind. Below, a large body of water reflects the low, golden sun, which casts a bright path of light across the surface. Dark, forested land stretches along the shoreline, while the sky fades from warm orange near the horizon to pale blue above, creating a dramatic alpine scene.

Day 6 — Villarrica Volcano

Touring on Villarrica with around 1,400 metres of ascent on consistent slopes. The descent combines upper mountain terrain with lower forest sections. Evening by the lake.

A skier with a backpack descends a steep, snow-covered mountainside, carving a smooth turn and kicking up a trail of powder. In the distance, layered blue mountain ranges stretch across the horizon, with a prominent snow-capped volcanic peak standing out beneath a clear sky.

Day 7 — Final Objective

A flexible final day with options such as Quetrupillán or Mocho‑Choshuenco, or time to explore the surrounding area. The week ends with a farewell dinner.

Distinctive, tall trees with spiky, umbrella-like branches stand in the foreground, their textured trunks and green needles sharply lit against a clear blue sky. Behind them, a prominent snow-capped volcanic peak rises above layered mountain ridges, partially framed by the trees, creating a contrast between lush forest and high alpine terrain.

Day 8 — Departure

Morning at your own pace before transfer back to Temuco Airport for departure.
