Ski & Sail Greenland: West Coast and Eternity Fjord

Tour one of the Arctic’s least travelled ski regions

Glacier lines, deep fjords and the space to choose your own way

Spend six days aboard a sailing vessel, your access point to the remote and dramatic ski touring terrain that only Greenland can offer. Small settlements sit far apart. Fjords cut deep into the land. Calving glaciers send echoes across the water.

Aztec Lady, a 63‑foot Arctic ketch, is the platform that brings you there. Each morning begins with a fresh view. A short dinghy ride carries you to shore. Skins on. Straight into big mountains rising from sea level. Expect long climbs and equally long, flowing descents, often finishing at the water’s edge.

Weather will set the direction. Your guides will adapt each day and choose the objectives that offer the best spots for touring, aiming for the freshest snow and the most rewarding lines.

A group of skiers climbs a steep, narrow snowy couloir between dark rock walls, carrying their skis on their backpacks, with a towering sunlit mountain rising in the background.

Who's this trip for?

For ski tourers and splitboarders with solid experience in varied snow and comfort moving in remote Arctic mountains. You can climb up to 1200 metres a day and keep a steady rhythm. This is our advanced level and requires notions of avalanche safety, rope systems and secure movement on steeper ground. You bring competence and motivation. We bring expertise and safety backup.

What will your days look like?

You start each day from a new anchorage along the west coast. A quick dinghy transfer brings you to shore and the touring begins from sea level. Climbs are steady, movement is constant and most descents finish close to the water. Snow and weather shift fast, so routes stay flexible. Your guides read the conditions and choose objectives that match what the coast delivers that day.

A metal-hulled two-masted sailing ship floats motionless on a perfectly calm fjord at night, illuminated by soft onboard lights, while bright green and purple northern lights sweep across the star-filled sky and reflect clearly on the still water.

How's life onboard?

Aztec Lady is a 63 foot Arctic ketch with enough space to move, dry gear and recover between tours. Cabins are simple and functional, and shared facilities keep the setup straightforward. Most evenings are spent anchored in quiet fjords. You eat well, review the day and prepare for the next objective. Mornings are calm, with time to gear up before the dinghy runs you to shore. It is an expedition environment with steady comfort, not luxury. The focus stays on the touring.

What are the conditions like?

Late May brings long days and a stable spring snowpack. The Gulf Stream also weakens here which helps preserve cold surfaces even as daytime temperatures rise. Fronts still move through, so shifts in weather can be fast and new snowfall is possible. There is no real darkness, only a short twilight that fades as June approaches. Expect raw conditions and snow that changes with elevation, timing and exposure.

These highlights give a general outline of the trip. Plans may shift before the trip starts and during the trip as conditions change. Weather, snow and the group’s experience will shape each day, and your guides will adjust accordingly throughout.

Day 1: Arrival in Maniitsoq

Arrival in Maniitsoq after the short flight from Nuuk. A five minute transfer brings you to the hotel. You settle in, meet the group and have dinner together. A straightforward start before moving into field conditions.

Day 2: Boarding Aztec Lady

A slow morning with time to walk through Maniitsoq. Lunch at the hotel, then a short taxi ride to the harbour. Once on board, you get your cabin and receive the safety briefing. Aztec Lady sails a few hours to the first anchorage where you spend the night.

Day 3: First Tour – Hamborgerland

After breakfast you prepare gear and review the plan. Hamborgerland offers several options and around eight hundred metres of ascent. A clean first day on skins. After the tour, Aztec Lady moves to the next anchorage.

Day 4: Entering Eternity Fjord

The first touring day inside Kangerlussuatsiaq. Taller peaks and calving fronts begin to dominate the coastline. If conditions allow, you aim for one of the accessible summits near the entrance of the fjord.

Days 5–6: Deeper into the Fjord

You continue further into the system. The mountains rise and features become more varied. The rhythm stays consistent: breakfast, dinghy to shore, full touring day, return to the boat, evening sail and dinner.

Day 7: Turning Outward

You start moving back towards the mouth of the fjord. Based on the week’s observations, your guides target the remaining slopes with the best conditions. A stop in Kangamiut is possible depending on timing.

Day 8: Final Ski Day

You look for strong conditions between Kangamiut and Maniitsoq. There are several areas with potential for a final clean descent. After touring, you return to Maniitsoq for dinner and the last night on board.

Day 9: Departure Day

Breakfast on the boat before disembarking and transferring to the airport for the flight home.

A line of skiers skins uphill through heavy snowfall on a wide, featureless slope, their figures faint against the whiteout backdrop as they move toward a barely visible ridge.
