Hiking Equipment Guide

The right gear for single-day and multi-day hikes

What layers do I need when hiking?

Hiking starts with the right preparation and builds on one simple principle, the layering principle. The right combination of layers offers exceptional adaptability, protection and thermal regulation, where a base layer, mid layer and a protective outer layer is the foundation to any trail adventure.

Whether you’re going on a single-day or multi-day hike, find the right equipment here.

What do I need for a Single-Day Hike?

For a single-day hike the primary needs are versatile layers that adapts to the weather and your pace. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a breathable mid layer for warmth, and finish with a wind resistant jacket that allows for optimal thermal regulation and weather protection. Use our MFR (Mass Flow resistance) reference system for guidance. A don’t forget the lightweight and packable waterproof jacket in case the weather turns.

For your lower body, choose pants suited for the conditions. A pair of quick-drying and lightweight hiking pants for warm days, or rugged and flexible for demanding trails are ideal. Top it off with accessories such as a protective hiking hat, a lightweight cap or an airy scarf, and you are ready for a day outdoors.

For single-day hikes we love a lightweight and tear resistant backpack of 18-32 litres. Enough volume to carry all the hiking essentials, but without adding to much weight or restricting your movement. With a close-to-body fit, adjustable and ergonomic carrying system, and adaptable design, you get a tailored hiking backpack.

What do I need for Multi-day hike?

When you head out for a multi-day hike, nature demands more, and so do we of our equipment. Every piece of equipment needs to justify it’s place. Start with a base layer with a wool blend, its warming and moisture-wicking properties is the ideal foundation. Continue with a wool or synthetic insulated mid layer for optimal thermal regulation and warmth in damp conditions, and a wind resistant jacket for weather protection. On the lower body, a rugged and hardwearing hiking pant that withstands wear and tear is the best option.

On a multi-day hike, you also want to bring an insulated layer for moments of inactivity. Down for the best warmth-to-weight ratio in dry and cold conditions, or synthetic insulation ion for damp conditions. Don’t forget your set of waterproof protection; a well ventilated 3-layer shell jacket and waterproof pants are a must to bring. Finish with essential accessories such as liners, waterproof hats and protective scarfs.

For multi-day hikes we recommend a backpack ranging from 35-100 liters, depending on your needs. Our multi-day packs feature the carry-on-bones and butterfly-bridge, technologies that helps distribute the weight of your pack onto your bones instead of your muscles, reducing muscle fatigue. Together with adjustable and padded straps, lightweight aluminum frames for stability, and a V3-pivot hip belt that follow your hip movement, you have an ergonomic and comfortable carrying system, even when carrying heavy loads on multi-day hikes. All our backpacks are compatible with our backpack accessories, when you want a tailored backpack experience.
