Discover remote fjords and Arctic peaks

Experience Arctic ski touring from Moondance, a 56-foot expedition sailboat built for high-latitude adventures. Sail to new fjords and remote peaks, ascend up untouched slopes, and carve fresh lines in dramatic backcountry terrain. Guided by IFMGA-certified experts, this intimate journey blends mountain and sea, with cosy evenings aboard, warm meals, and the quiet rhythm of the Arctic. Small groups ensure a personal, immersive adventure.


Trip Overview


Day 1: Arrive in Alta and settle into Øksfjord
Drive north to Øksfjord and meet your guides and the Moondance crew. Settle into a cosy bed and breakfast and enjoy a welcome dinner.


Day 2: Sail into the fjords and ski your first peak
Board Moondance and explore Tverrfjorddalen by ski or splitboard. Depending on conditions, enjoy a thrilling glacier crossing and descent to meet the boat.


Days 3-6: Explore Finnmark’s ice-carved landscapes
Sail through fjords and around islands, discovering varied terrain from mellow bowls to steep couloirs. Routes are flexible, shaped by weather, snow, and group goals, with opportunities to join daily route-planning sessions.


Day 7: Take one last turn on the slopes
Sail to Stjernøya—Star Island—for final runs on dramatic peaks before returning to Øksfjord for a farewell dinner aboard Moondance.


Day 8: Disembark and depart
After breakfast, transfer back to Alta Airport for your departure.

Fred Buttard

Fred is a French IFMGA Mountain Guide with 25 years’ experience leading ski trips and expeditions around the world, with a focus on northern Scandinavia. He has been guiding in Finnmark since 2007 and also pioneered trips in the Swedish mountains. At KMX, Fred designs our journeys and oversees our team of guides. You can contact him with questions about destinations, local conditions, weather and snow, history and culture, or technical advice on skiing and kit.
