Backpack Guide

Finding the Right Backpack

Choosing the right backpack is about finding the right balance of capacity, carrying comfort, weight and functionality. A smaller, streamlined pack keeps you moving freely when carrying only the essentials, while longer adventures and heavier loads require more capacity, support and adjustability.

To find the right backpack for your needs, start by considering three things:

– How long will you be out?
– What activity will you primarily use it for?
– How much equipment do you need to carry?

These factors will help determine the capacity, construction and features you need.

How Do I Know What Size Backpack I Need?

Backpack capacity is measured in litres, but choosing the biggest pack isn't always the best option. The right capacity depends on how long you'll be out, the conditions you're heading into and the amount of equipment you need to carry.

For shorter adventures, a compact backpack keeps the load close to the body and avoids unnecessary weight. As duration and equipment increase, additional capacity becomes necessary for extra layers, food, technical equipment and overnight gear.

How Do Klättermusen Backpacks Fit and Carry?

A properly fitted backpack keeps the load close to the body, distributes weight comfortably and remains stable while moving. The heavier the load, the more important correct fit and adjustment become.

Back Length
Positions the backpack correctly on your torso and helps create a balanced fit.

Hip Belt
Helps transfer weight from the shoulders to the hips when carrying heavier loads.

Shoulder Straps
Keep the backpack close to the body and stable without restricting movement.

Which Construction Is Right for Me?

Backpack weight is about more than the number on the scale. Reducing weight often means using a more streamlined construction with fewer components, while a midweight backpack can provide additional carrying support, organization and functionality.

Your choice should depend on the load you're carrying, the duration of your activity and whether you prioritize low weight or additional comfort and features.

LIGHTWEIGHT

Built with a streamlined construction to reduce overall weight and provide greater freedom of movement.

Choose Lightweight if:
You prioritize low weight, speed and efficiency when carrying lighter loads.

MIDWEIGHT

Built with additional carrying support, organization and features for increased comfort and versatility.

Choose Midweight if:
You prioritize carrying comfort and functionality when carrying more equipment or heavier loads.

What Makes Klättermusen Backpacks Different?

Beyond capacity and fit, the right features depend on your activity and the equipment you're carrying. Carrying systems, attachment options and weather protection all influence how a backpack performs in different conditions.

CARRYING SYSTEM

As loads become heavier, weight distribution becomes increasingly important. Klättermusen carrying systems are designed to keep the load stable and close to the body while supporting carrying comfort over longer periods.

MODULAR ATTACHMENT

Many Klättermusen backpacks feature our signature loop-and-hole webbing, allowing additional equipment and accessories to be attached externally. This makes it possible to adapt the pack depending on the activity and equipment you're carrying.

WEATHER PROTECTION

Our backpack fabrics provide protection against light rain and changing conditions. As most seams are not taped, the backpacks should not be considered fully waterproof. For prolonged or heavy rainfall, we recommend adding a rain cover.
