Follow the shoreline into untouched Arctic terrain

This trip takes you straight into Svalbard’s Arctic terrain. Your base is the Ocean Sherpa, a 113‑foot expedition vessel that moves you deep into remote fjords and positions you directly at the start of each day’s touring.

You travel through clean, sea facing slopes, climbing under your own power and skiing lines shaped by ice, weather and elevation. Conditions set the plan and routes shift as needed. Guides manade the safety framework. You focus on the moment, the ocean always part of the scene.

Who's this trip for?

This trip is for ski tourers and splitboarders who are comfortable travelling in Arctic conditions. You move well in varied snow and can climb up to twelve hundred metres in a day. This is our advanced level and requires notions of avalanche safety, basic rope work and secure movement on steeper ground. You bring competence and motivation. We bring expertise, safety backup and access to remote terrain.

What will your days look like?

You follow the conditions, not a fixed plan. Each morning you leave the Ocean Sherpa and move into quiet Arctic terrain with steady ascents and clear descents. Steeper lines are considered only when conditions allow. You eat outside, spend long hours on snow and reset on board as the vessel shifts position. Plans stay minimal. Adjustments happen throughout the day. Weather and light define the pace.

How's life onboard?

Life on board is simple and functional. Ocean Sherpa is a one hundred and thirteen foot expedition yacht designed for high latitude work. Twin cabins with private bathrooms provide a warm and reliable base. The vessel anchors close to terrain that is otherwise unreachable, giving direct access to ski touting right off the boat or by a short dinghy transfer. You sleep, eat and prepare in the same system you operate in.

What are the conditions like?

Daytime temperatures range from minus six to minus two degrees, with nights dropping to around minus twelve. Weather shifts quickly, bringing wind, snowfall or clear periods. April offers access to remote summits and long descents, with a snowpack that changes through the month. Daylight increases fast, moving from several hours of sun to near continuous light. Conditions vary. The environment sets the parameters.

These highlights give a general outline of the trip. Plans may shift before the trip starts and during the trip as conditions change. Weather, snow and the group’s experience will shape each day, and your guides will adjust accordingly throughout.

Trip Overview

Day 1: Arrive in Longyearbyen

Meet at the airport and travel to Mary Ann’s Polarrigg to gather as a group. After a short break we head to the harbour and board the Ocean Sherpa. Once settled, we sail into Isfjorden and anchor for the night.

Day 2: Ski the peaks of Isfjorden

After breakfast we head into the surrounding mountains. The area offers steady slopes with steeper options when conditions allow. Lunch outside, more skiing in the afternoon and then a return to the vessel. We move towards St John’s Fjord in the evening.

Day 3: Runs in St. John’s fjord

We spend the day skiing in St John’s Fjord among glaciers and mixed terrain. Objectives are chosen according to conditions. By now the daily rhythm of skiing, returning to the vessel and preparing for the next day is familiar. If weather allows, we continue towards Krossfjorden.

Day 4: Explore Krossfjorden

We sail into Krossfjorden for another day of skiing. The region is remote and defined by large tidewater glaciers. Historical sites from early whaling remain visible along the coast. We tour in this terrain before returning to the vessel.

Day 5: The island of seals & walruses

We travel to Prins Karls Foreland, known for wildlife and open views. When conditions allow, we ski local glaciers and summits with long descents towards the sea. In the evening we begin our return towards Isfjorden.

Day 6: Barentsburg’s hidden gems

We ski the terrain around Barentsburg, a Russian‑owned mining town. After skiing we dock in the harbour and have time to walk through the settlement. Those who want can visit The Red Bear Bar and Brewery before returning to the vessel for the night.

Day 7: Finish strong

On our final day on skis, we’ll return to Isfjorden to explore fresh mountain terrain before making our way back to Longyearbyen. To mark the end of our Arctic journey, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner aboard the Ocean Sherpa.

Day 8: Disembark and depart

After breakfast we leave the Ocean Sherpa and begin the journey home. We will drive you to the airport with time before your flight.
