The Klättermusen Layering Guide

During intense winter activities, humidity is our biggest enemy.

For over 40 years, the art of layering has been key when creating Klättermusen garments

Humidity between your layers is a significant problem and every type of performance fabric tries to address this in different ways. The biggest issue is the way humidity impacts the function of the fabric, and the consequences that follow.

When the fibers of a fabric become moist, the fabric allows less air to pass through, leading to even more humidity being trapped. The trapped humidity draws heat from the body and can lead to excessive cooling. In freezing conditions, these problems become even worse, as humidity can form ice crystals, which make the fabric stiff and lose its elasticity. Elasticity is critical for forming a proper seal by following the movements of your body.

This is why humidity needs to be actively managed when the amount of insulation is increased, and layers added. This article will show you how.

Core Comfort with Base Layers

The core layer works as a second skin and is there to keep you comfortable and dry. For this purpose, our Organic Merino Wool is an outstanding choice of material. Together in a mix with Tencel®, the Organic Merino Wool really shows its best side, in our case in the form of the Fafne Activity Base Layer Set.

Fafne Turtle and Long Johns keep their shape through wear and tear and have a wicking effect thanks to the Organic Merino Wool. Details such as reflectors, thumb grips, and seamless and abrasion-free shoulders, make this set your ultimate base layer for any winter activity.

Complete Temperature Control with Versatile Mid Layers

Control your temperature with the correct mid layer. By picking one with wicking effects, such as one made from wool, the humidity is continuously removed, and your temperature will stay on a comfortable level throughout your entire activity.

Our mid layers, made from recycled wool, are a highly effective way of being sustainable. This gives old and used garments a new life, while we at the same time can offer first-class wool products with high durability and comfort.

The recycled wool we use is collected all around the globe. It originates both from old garments but also from the cuttings from new fabrics. The materials are assorted by fiber content and colors, cleaned and reduced down to fiber. From this fiber, new material is spun and knitted into new, warm and cosy garments.

Responsible Thermal Insulation

Klättermusen’s down insulation systems are packable and can be worn both on top of your shell or as a mid layer underneath. All Klättermusen down products are made with Box Construction – a method to ensure that the ventilation is fully under your control. By avoiding penetrating seams, cold spots in the garment are avoided. We only use down certified with RDS (Responsible Down Standard).

Our down equipment is constructed to act as a natural part of our systems. The instantly recognizable shoulder yoke offers protection from snow or light rain, and the wear of shoulder straps, while the neck opening is slanted for simple integration with both inner and outer layers.

Down is sensitive to humidity, both internal and external, which impacts the thermal performance. This is why it is very important to us that our down integrates well with the rest of your equipment.

Protection with Durable Shells

Breathability, waterproofness and technical details in different combinations make an optimal shell that fulfills your needs. Klättermusen shell jackets are created to last, season after season, made from sustainable materials.

Some technical details that our shell jackets feature are a 3D-adjustable hood, constructed to follow the movements of your head without covering your field of vision, pre-bent elbows which ensure that the jacket stays in place, and a slanted zipper to avoid abrasion.

The Cutan® fabric of many of our outer shells is a sustainable alternative to more commercial shell materials. Cutan® is a proprietary Klättermusen waterproof and ventilating technology, with a PTFE-free membrane and a completely fluorocarbon-free production. Cutan® fabrics are soft, flexible, and have great stretch. The three fabric layers of the Cutan® fabric are laminated together into one single fabric. Cutan® is 100% recyclable.

Duracoat™ reinforcements are added to our shell jackets as an extra reinforcement. This iconic reinforcement is developed by Klättermusen and is a surface treatment, meaning that no extra seams or layers of fabric are added, while keeping it very flexible.

The MFR 10 label on most of our shell jackets ensures that the garment is both windproof and waterproof. The Klättermusen MFR System (The Mass Flow Resistance System) guides you to select the right equipment for your next outdoor mission.
